First Annual Yellow Pages Association Sustainability Report

Our President, Betty Brown, and Vice President, Cindy Adamek, have returned from the Yellow Pages Association (YPA) conference in Vegas with much to share. One of the key presentations during the conference that I felt our readers would enjoy hearing about was delivered by YPA President, Neg Norton, who took the stage to discuss the first annual YPA Sustainability Report and outline YPAs approach in supporting the “triple bottom line” – people, planet and profit. Though the Association has grown to encompass digital and mobile technologies, the Print Yellow Pages remain a key facet of the business. With 12 billion references annually, the print directory continues to be a valuable resource for consumers when ready to buy.

In 2007, compelled by a strong concern for the environment, YPA aligned itself with the Association of Directory Publishers (ADP). The goal of this initiative was to better understand how the Yellow Pages industry could produce print directories more effectively. YPA and ADP connected with environmental and government agencies to get the ball rolling and in doing so, many positive steps have been taken. YPA, its partners and members have endeavored to ensure best practices in printing and producing print directories. Perhaps you’ve wondered how natural resources have been conserved and how the environment has been kept at the fore front with a focus on eliminating harmful substances, dealing with waste reduction, recycling and paper issues. I think you’ll find the first annual YPA Sustainability Report informative and educational.

We can all do our part to make a contribution to the environment as individuals, families and businesses. And one thing is for sure, YPA has accomplished much in the area of sustainability and will continue its efforts in 2010 and beyond.
