A Social Network For Children? Welcome to Togetherville

I’m catching up on a few emails and one in particular from SmartBrief caught my eye. The article was from on Social Media and children.

The article mentions that the Togetherville Social Network went live Tuesday and is targeting children ages 6-10 and their parents. It appears that one purpose of the site is to provide a safe platform for children to participate and become familiar with Social Media and interact with friends. But don’t they do that on the playground at school? Though the network won’t carry advertising right now, this would be a great way to connect with this demographic to market products and services. Perhaps the platform will evolve with time.

When I visited the Togetherville Home Page, it looks like parents build their child’s social group from their own Facebook contacts.

If I had children this age, I think I’d check the network out. But then again, as I recall, parents are so busy helping the kids with homework and running back and forth to Tennis, Soccer, and Baseball practice, etc. how do you find the time!? I remember many nights where dinner was picked up and eaten on the run just to get the kids where they needed to go. I suppose as long as safety features were in place and the kids are taught at an early age not to divulge personal information about themselves online or elsewhere, for that matter, it could be a lot of fun.

Since this Social Network is in its infancy stage, I guess we’ll just have to wait and see how well, or not, it is received. It could just be the next big thing.
