What is SEO?

So you have a fancy new website but you have a problem: nobody knows about it, so nobody’s coming to your site. You, my friend, need to look into Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Search Engine Optimization is a process that helps increase your page’s search engine ranking. While there is a lot more that goes into it a full SEO campaign, there are three basic parts to SEO, Technical, Off-Page & On-Page.

This is behind-the-scenes stuff, including tweaking code, fixing broken links, clearing up crawl errors.

This is getting relevant sites to link to the website, including guest blogging and other social media.

This is the main part in most cases. It can be as range from something as easy as researching a few keywords and fitting them in a page’s content all the way up to a complete rewrite of all the content. First, we run a report and look at every page on a site to see if it has everything search engines are looking for and we look at the content to see what kind of keywords we need to research. The things the search engines are looking for are:

Page Title – The name of the page (60-70 Characters)

Meta Description – Summary of what the page is about (155 Characters or less)

Headers – Important info on the page, usually used to separate sections

Image Alt Text – Search engines can’t see images, this tells them about the image

Relevant Content – Content that is relevant to the page and uses keywords

Most of this stuff is mainly for the search engine’s benefit. It tells the search engine what your page is about so they know when to bring it up in search results. For example, I did a search for ‘Search engine optimization and got this as a result:

SEO Title & Meta Description

Here’s an example of the SEO components that you can see when you go to a page:

On page SEO description

Combined with your content, these factors tell the search engines what your page is about and that it’s a good place for searchers to find relevant content. While it can take a few months to see the full results of an SEO campaign, the traffic you draw in can help your business grow and sustain that growth.
